Serves as the primary liaison between the Directorate of Athletics and the Dean of Faculty. Assists cadet athletes in utilizing Dean of Faculty academic resources. Counsels and evaluates cadets, as appropriate, utilizing effective student assessment and assists with development of individualized academic action plans. Leverages expertise in academic and course specialty in one-on-one and small group sessions to diagnose the root cause of student academic challenges and provides targeted instruction to enhance learning. Communicates with course directors and Department of Physical Education on observed trends in student performance. Participates in professional development activities and opportunities within the department. Performs instructor duties in coordination with the Department of Physical Education when required. Works toward developing and improving teaching practices. Performs administrative functions to ensure the timely and effective offering of education both in and out of the classroom.
Effectively manages and coordinates the daily operation of the Directorate of Athletics (AD) programs requiring liaison with other USAFA mission elements, to include, but not limited to: attending weekly Dean of Faculty (DF) staff meetings; working directly with DF on cadet academic performance and cadet-athlete issues; serving as the AD voting member on Academic Review Committees. Advises 30 intercollegiate athletic programs including 27 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I program coaching staffs to support and facilitate the Academy's Course of Instruction (COI) curriculum, and academic programs. Advises and works with DF and AD registrars on cadet-athlete schedules to optimize cadet-athlete time. Works with DF academic advisors to ensure cadet-athlete academic success and coordinates additional support as necessary.
Performs a variety of administrative functions, as required, to ensure the timely and effective offering of physical education courses, athletic programs, and cadet-athlete academic success. Keeps abreast of current instructional and coaching methods to ensure the most innovative and effective methods are being used. Participates in faculty governance by attending department and faculty meetings and serves, when requested, on departmental committees. Provides appropriate advice and counsel to improve the quality of educational/athletic programs. Maintains the professional and ethical standards of the USAF Academy. Proactively embraces the USAF Academy Core Values, Institutional Outcomes, Character Development Outcomes, and USAF Academy regulations and operating instructions. Accepts responsibility as a role model and mentor to the cadets in their courses and programs. Maintains memberships in appropriate professional organizations, attends conventions, maintains liaison with others in the field including military and civilian universities and follows new developments to stay current with coaching and teaching techniques.
This position may require occasional work outside of normal duty hours, during nights, weekends, and holidays.
