This position serves as a Fire Operations Specialist with responsibilities for the development, implementation and administration of the park fire suppression program. Provide operational oversite for a fire suppression module and responsible for providing opportunities for on the job training, mentoring and developing module members.
This position coordinates and collaborates with the Fire Management Officer and functions as primary fire operations point of contact for park.
This position is responsible for ensuring safe initial and extended attack suppression procedures are implemented, ensuring fire management tactics meet resource objectives and coordination with Incident Management Teams.
May serve as Duty Officer for the park and when called upon will serve as acting Fire Management Officer. In addition to fire suppression this position is responsible for planning and implementing fuels projects for the park.
This position will be called on at times to participate on interdisciplinary teams; will provide fire management input ensuring compliance for both agencies and serve as subject matter expert for wildland fire management.

These positions are covered by the special enhanced annuity retirement provisions for Federal Firefighters and Law Enforcement officers and have a mandatory retirement age of 57. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized for this position is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: Assisting in managing a broad range of fire programs such as preparedness, prevention, prescribed burning, monitoring, and hazardous fuels reduction. Assisting in writing and executing wildland fire management plans, prescribed burn plans, and preparedness plans. Assisting in determining annual pre-suppression and suppression needs.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. There is no education substitute to qualify at the GS-456-9 grade level.

Physical Demands: Duties involve fieldwork: requiring above average physical fitness and endurance. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities.
Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and field setting. The work performed in an office setting is primarily sedentary. The work performed outdoors is in forest and desert environments or in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, or covered by vegetation. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating situations under an unpredictable set of circumstances. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the job requires that protective clothing be worn (hard hat, gloves, boots, flame resistant clothing and other personal protective equipment). Work requires travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
