Duties

Help
  • Installs, modifies, maintains and repairs new and existing water supply systems in buildings such as barracks, gymnasiums, administration and command facilities, special purpose facilities such as parachute packing sheds and training facilities.
  • Diagnoses, maintains and cleans heating elements in large domestic water heaters such as heat exchangers or tube bundles.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs equipment common to the plumbing trade such as domestic water heaters, hot water storage tanks, hot water generators, pipes carrying water to and from other equipment, circulating pumps.
  • Repairs or replaces equipment such as water closets, lavatories, showers, sinks, bathtubs, drinking fountains, laundry tubs, urinals, dishwashers, hot and cold-water pipes, sump pumps.
  • Estimates material requirements and completes supply requests for material such pipe, fittings and fixtures, valves, water heaters, hot and cold-water storage tanks, circulating and booster pumps, faucets, backflow prevention device.
  • Use hands tools such as plumb bobs, closet augers, drain cleaning snakes, propane torches, acetylene torches, pipe threading and cutting equipment.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the applicant to obtain and maintain Backflow Prevention Certification from the American Water Works Association.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weights over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Plumber ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common tasks in interpreting plans, blueprints, etc. to layout and plan the work to be completed; I have experience assembling, installing, maintaining and repairing piping systems, fixtures, and other equipment used to distribute, supply, or dispose of water or wastewater in structures, buildings and/or site lay outs. I can tap main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope, and determining and installing valves, traps, and unions to ensure proper operation of a variety of systems and equipment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort - Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weights over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).
  • Working Conditions- Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee will be required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; and in close quarters such as manholes. Employee is exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, scrapes, burns, and infections. Frequently required to make repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Employee may be required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, coveralls, ear plugs, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, and safety shoes. Employee will work with and around hazardous chemicals while cleaning and repairing tanks, sewers, and plumbing fixtures. Employee will be required to attend all training assigned for the safe use, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals and be able and willing to understand and execute all safety precautions when working with hazardous chemicals.???????
