The Assistant Inspector General for Audits (AIG) for Information Technology Audits (ITA) position is in the Office of Audits (OA), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Office of Audits examines, evaluates and, where necessary, critiques, operations, and activities, recommending ways for the Department of Homeland Security to carry out its responsibilities in the most effective, efficient, and economical manner possible.
Through independent audits and program analyses, OA:
- Protects the public interest and taxpayer dollars by bringing about positive change in the performance, accountability, and integrity of DHS and component programs and operations, including disaster assistance, acquisitions, counterterrorism, border security, immigration enforcement, and information technology systems and infrastructure.
- Identifies deficiencies and makes recommendations to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of DHS and component programs, helping Department leadership and program managers achieve their mission while operating in accordance with laws and regulations.
- Serves as a senior level advisor to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Audits and participates in the development, planning, and implementation of the DHS' and OA's goals and objectives in carrying out assigned functions. Participates with the DIGA in the formulation of audit program policies, procedures, goals, and objectives and the development of long and shortrange strategic plans for ITA programs and activities. Participates in the formulation of budget requirements to accomplish program goals and activities.
- Leads, directs, and is responsible for operational and functional development, implementation, and supervision of audits and evaluations of DHS' major IT programs, systems, and infrastructure supporting DHS' critical mission, goals, and priorities. This can include oversight of information technology operations, security, privacy protections, technology management, systems acquisition, and data-driven audits of all DHS Components.
- Supervises day-to-day operations of ITA, in assigned locations, including Headquarters and the Field Offices. Manages and oversees the performance and execution of all ITA activities nationwide, which consist of a wide variety of Audit programs and operations for preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse, and mismanagement. Directs and provides oversight of the work of various ITA Divisions such as:
- Cybersecurity and Intelligence: Conducts mandated and discretionary audits to evaluate DHS' compliance with cybersecurity related Federal laws and Executive orders to safeguard the Department's information systems and the Nation's critical infrastructure. Also reviews the effectiveness of DHS' cybersecurity and intelligence programs and initiatives.
- Information Systems and Controls: Conducts audits to assess security posture and effectiveness of DHS IT infrastructure, such as server security, disaster recovery, and management of government-furnished equipment.
- Information Technology Performance and Management: Conducts audits to assess the acquisition, implementation, management, and performance of major IT programs and technologies to support DHS' evolving mission requirements. Assesses information sharing and systems integration initiatives through the examination of how people, processes, and technology work together to advance Departmental goals.
