In conjunction with the Directors, the Deputy Director provides oversight and coordination of the Federal Programs Branch litigation activities and programs. The Deputy Director supervises and directs all aspects of the work of attorneys to include assignment and distribution of work, and reviewing and approving pleadings, briefs, and other papers filed with the courts, in a substantive litigation area to be determined by the Directors. The Deputy Director analyzes and reviews proposed and pending legislation that may affect the office's areas of expertise. The Deputy Director personally prepares and handles some of the office's high-stakes litigation, arguing major cases in court and conducting negotiations with opposing parties in sensitive situations. Additionally, the incumbent serves as an expert in federal practice litigation and serves as a resource to attorneys throughout the Division and the Department in the planning, briefing, and tactical approaches to the handling of assigned litigation. The Deputy Director works with the Directors and office leadership to provide support and advice to client agency counsel and the Offices of the United States Attorneys concerning federal practice litigation and related policy matters. Finally, the Deputy Director advises and consults with staff on new program orientations or directives and ensures that adequate resources will be available for implementation within the Federal Programs Branch.
