The Chief Science Officer (CScO) serves a critical role of Science and Technology (S&T) leadership, advocacy, and coordination for the service. The CScO's role crosses the spectrum of scientific, engineering, and technical matters entailed in research, analysis, development and evaluation of surveillance, tactical warning satellite operations, space control, space lift, and cyberspace requirements definition, exercises, training and testing. The incumbent is: the Focal Point for Science, Technology, and Research-related (STR) activity and investments within the service; key interlocutor for USSF on Science, Technology, and Research-related activity and investments within the DAF eco-system. The CScO integrates effort and represents USSF within DAF; and a senior leader within CTIO, advising the L2. The CScO spans silo boundaries to represent CTIO within USSF and beyond, providing integrative oversight across Directorates to gain maximum impact for resources. The CScO accomplishes results through a broad variety of means consonant with the expertise and seniority of role.
For 0800, General Engineering Series:
a. A professional engineering degree from an accredited institution is required. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

b. A combination of education and experience as required by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
