Help

As a Supervisory Research Fish Biologist within the Southwest Biological Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Support the research and monitoring activities of the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center.
  • Conduct laboratory and field studies utilizing knowledge of fish biology, fish physiology, fish ecology, relevant sampling techniques and equipment for big-river fishes, and aquaculture methods for captive holding, propagation and rearing of native fishes.
  • Lead a team of scientists and staff to determine the biotic and abiotic factors controlling the dynamics of native fish populations.
  • Interpreting results from research to prepare scientific and technical papers of the results for publication by the USGS and scientific journals.
  • Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
The work involves office settings as well as field and laboratory research. When field work is conducted, it may involve walking and hiking in remote and rugged desert and riverine areas, and possible exposure to extremes of hot and cold weather, water hazards and other factors that require experience with safety planning. Laboratory work may include standing for long periods of time while conducting job duties. Personal protective safety equipment is required to meet Occupational Safety and Health Standards.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: For research positions, applicants must show they have a degree with major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included:

  • At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and
  • At least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or freshwater ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and
  • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.

For GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Experience conducting independent research in fisheries science, that includes but is not limited to, independent and collaborative experimental design, statistical analyses of datasets, interpretation of results, dissemination and presentation of scientific results to both technical and non-technical audiences, overseeing large or targeted field and/or lab projects, authoring or co-authoring scientific peer-reviewed papers, developing and applying new research theories and methodologies, and coordinating multidisciplinary research across different groups.
