NATURE OF WORK This is professional, scholarly work preserving, creating, and disseminating historical information about the U.S. Senate. Work includes providing research, writing, and editorial expertise to the Senate Historical Office and the Senate community; collaborating with Historical Office staff on institutional history projects; providing presentations on a variety of Senate-related topics; serving as a reference source to the Senate community, scholars, the media, and the public regarding historical events and the institutional history of the U.S. Senate. The Assistant Historian also leads the history content team for the U.S. Senate website and social media. Work is bound by Secretary of the Senate policies and procedures; the U.S. Senate Handbook; and the Senate Ethics Manual, but requires independent judgment in setting priorities and handling assignments. A Ph.D. in United States history and three to five years of experience directly related to U.S. history, such as teaching or museum work and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of U.S. political history, the U.S. Congress, and the legislative process.
Skill in researching and writing articles, essays, and reports for general and specialized audiences.
Knowledge of documentary editing.
Demonstrated knowledge of the methods and techniques of scholarly historical research, including knowledge of print, electronic, and online resources; knowledge of the resources and services of the Library of Congress, National Archives, and other major repositories and how to access them; demonstrated ability to perform research using all methods.
Ability to use computer equipment, related software programs, and social media platforms.
Ability to work collaboratively with Historical Office staff as well as historians, curators, and editors of other offices and institutions.
Strong public relations and speaking skills.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Ability to gain top secret security clearance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office environment with exposure to everyday risks and discomforts, and requires the use of normal safety precautions. Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and carrying items up to 25 pounds, as well as regular use of typical office equipment, software programs, and methods of communication. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required for performance of duties. Work also requires physical presence in the office, except as otherwise required by the Office of the Secretary of the Senate.
