A successful candidate in this position will serve as an Electrical Engineer in System Protection for system integration, modification, redesign, troubleshooting, installation, operation and maintenance, and failure analysis for all System Protection and Control (SPC) systems and equipment in the District.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will:
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of Education and Experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-11: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: experience in participating in electrical engineering studies, analysis, and tests related to the operation, maintenance, or construction of a transmission or distribution power system.

GS-12: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: experience in applying principles, concepts, and electrical engineering practices for transmission or distribution power systems related to protective relaying, metering, telemetering, alarm and data logging systems, and control schemes.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-12 grade level.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of crouching, bending, or standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, and climbing in performing regular and periodic construction activities, field inspections, or to observe and study work operations. Work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds (i.e., 23 kilograms), such as equipment and samples.
Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as high noise levels, toxic or irritating chemicals, and adverse weather conditions at sites. Special safety precautions such as protective clothing and gear may be necessary. The employee may be required to travel approximately 1-5 days per month.
