Learn more about
The newly formed Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board is the product of the 2018 Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Act, which won bipartisan support in Congress, was signed by former President Trump and whose members were nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The review board's task is to expedite the review and release of government-held records related to civil rights cold cases between 1940 and 1980. The law establishes new guidelines governing redactions and release of documents; it also calls for records that were previously redacted under the federal Freedom of Information Act to be given a fresh look. The board and its staff will work closely with federal agencies to accelerate the release of documents so they can become more readily available to families of victims of civil rights crimes, legal organizations, journalists and scholars who examine American history.
