The Education Specialist serves a developmental capacity and assists the L&E team in developing and implementing educational programs for families that fulfill the USBG's mission. The Education Specialist also leads programs for K-12 students as needed.
Major Duties:
Family-Based Educational Program Development and Work
Assists in the drafting of educational goals, objectives and outcomes for family-based programs, as well as family-based hands-on activities and outreach programs.
Assists with developing interpretive plans and lesson plans for activities and programs.
Assists with developing volunteer, intern and/or employee training on family programs and facilitation techniques for engaging families.
Offers and facilitates informal family-based educational programs and hands-on activities for online, at the Garden and at outreach events and venues.
Drafts family-based educational content for website, social media, brochures, handouts and curriculum for review by the science, Horticulture and L&E Team.
Family-Based Educational Program Administration and Collaboration
Works with the Learning and Outreach Team and Horticulture to develop and plan annually a suite of family-based educational programs, as well as hands-on activities for daily drop-in educational experiences, festivals and other large programs and volunteer, intern and/or employee trainings.
Reviews and recommends updates and improvements to lessons and materials for family-based educational programming in a garden museum setting, online and for outreach events.
Ensures that developed programs adhere to the USBG business plan.
Collaborates with Science Education Specialist and Horticulture employees to ensure programs, activities and products are scientifically accurate and appropriate for family audiences. Keeps abreast of best practices in museum and botanical garden education and applies them at USBG.
Communicates and collaborates with internal stakeholders in the AOC and USBG including USBG Leadership and the Administration, Horticulture, Operations and L&E divisions of the USBG.
Educational Supplies and Program Maintenance and Management
Works with the Learning and Outreach Team and broader L&E Team to identify and order needed educational supplies.
Ensures that Classroom and other educational locations and materials setups are compliant with established accessibility and safety practices.
Publicizes Educational Programs
Works with the Media and Public Affairs Specialist and other L&E employees to enhance public understanding and awareness of family-based educational programs, activities and projects of the USBG.
Assists in drafting informational content about family programs for website, social media, cell phone tour, sign, handouts, brochure and other educational content, as requested.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had either specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below. Education and experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Candidates for the GS-07 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes:
(1) Teaching and/or facilitating informal family-based education and training;
(2) Creating course materials to be used in classes, trainings, workshops, seminars, internet-based training and/or multimedia platforms;
(3) Providing assistance with assessing teacher training and/or other training programs;
(4) Organizing, maintaining and managing family based educational or other resource materials;
(5) Assisting in the evaluation of program activities and making recommendations for improvement;
(6) Assisting with developing lesson plans for activities and programs.

Superior Academic Achievement
Superior Academic Achievement which is defined as having achieved superior academic standing as evidenced by:
(1) Class standing - upper third of the graduating class in the college, university or major subdivision;
(2) Grade-point average (GPA) – (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;
(3) Honor society membership in a national scholastic honor society listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.
To be creditable, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Qualifying on Education:
You may substitute education for experience for this position. Your education must consist of two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree. Must be related to the duties of the position.
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
