Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a shipboard expert in the collection, processing, and quality control of geophysical data.
  • You will work assignments up to 50% onboard survey ships and aircrafts and at remote land sites.
  • You will develop, implement, and maintain assigned gridded geophysical databases.
  • You will interpret geophysical data, maps regional stratigraphy, computes layer thickness, and grids thickness.
  • You will support acoustic database development, implementation, and maintenance, focusing on geophysical database addressing questions and concerns regarding geophysical database, its accuracy, geoacoustic parameters, and acoustic boundaries.
  • You will be responsible for determining available geophysical data coverage for assigned geographical areas through library searches, database queries, and external contacts.
  • You will monitor on-going technical contracts by providing technical guidance to contractors, evaluating deliverables, and providing feedback to Contracting Officer?s Representative (COR).

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays, or on an ?on call? basis, necessary to meet ashore or afloat mission requirements.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining assigned gridded geophysical databases.
  • Determining available geophysical data coverage for assigned geographical areas through library searches, database queries, and external contacts.
  • Posing a professional, comprehensive, intensive, and practical knowledge of physical geology, historical geology, structural geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, geophysics, or oceanography.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A PHYSICAL SCIENTIST (1301):
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
Or
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A GEOPHYSICS (1313):
Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR an OCEANOGRAPHER (1360):
Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
Or
Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirement, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-09) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining assigned gridded geophysical databases.
  • Determining available geophysical data coverage for assigned geographical areas through library searches, database queries, and external contacts.
  • Posing a professional, comprehensive, intensive, and practical knowledge of physical geology, historical geology, structural geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, geophysics, or oceanography.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:

Applicants have successfully completed three "3" years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
