The incumbent serves as Park Manager (Superintendent) for Appalachian National Scenic Trail (APPA), a National Park Service (NPS) with the headquarters located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The APPA spans 14 states, passing through six units of the national park system, eight national forests, dozens of state parks, forests, and game lands along its 2172-mile traverse from Maine to Georgia. APPA includes 270,000 acres with various designations from fee simple to conservation easements with over 100,000 acres under the direct responsibility of the NPS. It transects multiple political jurisdictions at the federal, state, and local levels. Within a half-day's drive, a third of third of the nation's populace, APPA receives over four million visitors a year including a wide range of users from "thru hikers" to extended backpackers to those out for an afternoon commune with nature.
As Superintendent, the incumbent provides management and oversight of the preservation, interpretation, maintenance, administration, and development of the trail as well as the safety and well-being of staff, volunteers, and visitors. The incumbent provides direction, management, supervision and evaluation of all trail programs and provides leadership in the development of policies, standards, agreements, and procedures that govern the administration and implementation of the programs, including the functional areas of public use management, resource stewardship, education and interpretation, fiscal and human resources management, trail maintenance, visitor services, safety management, trail partnerships, public affairs, budget planning and execution, environmental compliance, trail planning, and development. The incumbent is responsible for administering a multitude of agreements with other federal agencies, state and local governments, volunteer organizations, and non-profit entities, that articulate agreed-upon understandings and responsibilities for achieving satisfactory protection and management of APPA and associated lands.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: Occasionally is required to work under unusual and stressful situations which call for physical stamina and emotional stability.
