As a Post Doctoral Reseach Fellowship within the St. Petersburg Coastal & Marine Science Center; Candidate driven proposals.
The USGS St. Petersburg Coastal & Marine Science Center invites candidates to propose a project that fills knowledge gaps identified by a USGS John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis working group (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/john-wesley-powell-center-for-analysis-and-synthesis/science/beyond-waves-and-shifting-sand) and advance understanding of coastal ecogeomorphological state change on barrier islands using, for example, observations from geospatial products (e.g., unmanned aerial system imagery, satellite imagery, lidar, etc.) and/or landscape modeling approaches. The proposed research project should focus on ecogeomorphological change on barrier islands. The proposal should include a description of how the research will leverage existing data and/or what data will need to be collected. The proposed project should reflect considerable expertise in the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of coastal and marine ecogeomorphological and/or geospatial data. The proposal should characterize coastal environments and processes that cross disciplinary boundaries while also integrating ecogeomorphological data in novel ways in order to understand how an island's ecogeomorphological characteristics may impact its resilience to extreme storms and/or sea-level rise.
Candidates are encouraged to contact SPCMSC and WHCMSC researchers to inquire about existing sample and data archives, standard processing procedures, timelines, and software packages.

Many proposals will only require working in an office environment. Others may involve field work that includes physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities in adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures; while carrying loads up to 50 pounds.

Examples of such experience may include planning and executing complex physical science studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. Qualifications
The USGS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program provides highly motivated recent Ph.D. graduates with the opportunity to conduct concentrated research in association with selected USGS Scientists, as a final element to their formal career preparation. Selectees will utilize the excellent scientific resources available at the USGS in the conduct of scientific investigations and exploratory development associated with advanced scientific research. This program will provide selectees the opportunity to contribute to the overall research efforts of the USGS and in turn they will gain excellent professional research experience early in their careers.
Appointments under the USGS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program will be made under the Schedule A, 213.3102 (r) excepted appointing authority for a minimum period of 13 months and may be extended up to a maximum period of 4 years.
