Duties

Help

The Director, Academic Appointments & Internships is responsible for directing OAAI activities and functions, developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy for a worldclass, inclusive and safe internship program and high-quality fellowship opportunities.

In this position, you will:

  • Oversee the strategic direction of the Office of Academic Appointments and Internships.

  • Ensure effective systems and processes are in place to promote and recruit for all the Smithsonian Internships, Fellowships, and academic appointments opportunities with a focus on increasing participation and access among a diverse set of appointees.
  • Manage program operating budget and engage in fundraising to support programs.

  • Plan, organize, direct, supervise, and manage the personnel and activities of the unit

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade IS/GS-14 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience directing fellowship, internship, or academic appointment activities and functions; developing and implementing comprehensive strategic plans; and long- and short-term staff planning.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Ability to develop multi-year strategy for all dimensions of a fellowship and internship program addressing both central administrative functions and supporting unit implementation and capacity building.
  2. Ability to creatively develop plans for higher education and research support programs.

  3. Knowledge of national and international fellowship and intern funding opportunities.

  4. Ability to direct, plan, and evaluate organizational operations and coordinate problem resolutions that involve several organizational entities.
