As an Oceanographer within the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC), some of your specific duties will include:
-Develop, prepare, and manage instrumentation for deployment in nearshore, low, and high energy environments, including set-up, testing, and calibration systems to acquire real-time data.
-Develop, build, install, and maintain camera systems in harsh environmental settings that maximize the likelihood of successful data collection. Strong cross-cutting skills and knowledge of camera-based remote sensing equipment, telecommunications, electronics, coding, and time-series data analysis.
-Manage the processing and archiving of data, including extensively modifying and adapting techniques and procedures.
-Lead the design, planning, organization, and coordination for multifaceted data collection field activities of oceanographic, bathymetric, and sedimentologic field data to address questions related to sediment transport.
-Develop, prepare, and manage scientific instrumentation for deployment in nearshore, high-energy environments, including set-up, testing, and calibration of field systems and electronics.
-Author and co-author reports, journal articles, Open-File Reports, and presentations describing data collection, analysis techniques, modeling methods and results.
-Present project results at meetings and conferences and working with stakeholders providing outreach for public meetings and media coverage of program activities to inform the public and local-to-federal level funding agencies of scientific advances. Serve on expert panels and other avenues in support of modeling strategies and published results.
-Develop new innovative methods to address problems for which guidelines and precedents are not substantially applicable.
-Strong cross-cutting skills and knowledge of complex operational systems and modeling strategies that require high-performance computing and robust voluminous data management methods.
-Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Working Conditions:
The majority of time will be spent in the office, working at a computer. Travel will be required for conferences and meetings and possibly for field work. Fieldwork may require moderate to strenuous activities such as hiking, swimming, carrying up to 40 pounds, driving vehicles with trailers, and/or operating small vessels. Fieldwork is performed in and on the ocean, estuaries, and coastal lands and is subject to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions such as breaking waves and strong water currents. Fieldwork at sea is subject to extreme weather conditions, high noise levels and a moving platform and may include work in the water. Endurance and agility are required to perform field studies.
