The Deputy Director, CLB-NC, in conjunction with the Branch Director, directs and supervises the work of attorneys and other personnel in the National Courts Section, including international trade litigation, either directly or by providing guidance to Assistant Directors, Senior Trial Counsel, or Trial Attorneys. Represents the Department of Justice on interagency task forces, study groups, or litigation teams. In this context, incumbent speaks for the Director and deals with key officials of other Departmental components or agencies in which the cases handled by the section originate. Consults with and advises officials of these agencies about the effects of court decisions and other developments on agency policies and procedures to enhance the section's ability to carry out its mission.
Serves as an expert on issues within the National Courts Section's areas of responsibility, including international trade law, and is sought as a consultant not only within the Commercial Litigation Branch and throughout the Department, but also by other Federal agencies. Provides input to the Branch Director in the formulation and implementation of new policies or organizational changes having an impact on the Branch and the Division.

The Civil Division is the largest litigating division in the Department of Justice. Each year, the Civil Division's 1,100 lawyers represent some 200 client agencies in approximately 50,000 different matters.
The Commercial Litigation Branch, one of the largest branches in the Division, handles cases that involve billions of dollars in claims both by and against the Government. This Branch pursues claims for the recovery of monies fraudulently secured or improperly diverted from the United States Treasury, defends the country's international trade and procurement actions, defends and asserts the Government's patent and other intellectual property rights, and handles other issues implicating the government's financial interests, including matters in bankruptcy.
