Care in the Community (CitC). The local VA Community Care department is the 'clinic' that coordinates all patient services for Veterans outside the VA Healthcare System.
The incumbent's work impacts the administrative aspect of patient care, including access, scheduling/coordinating appointments using advanced clinic access principles, collecting and updating demographic and insurance information, managing the consult tracker, return to clinic visits, patient processing and customer service. His/her work also impacts processes, action plans, monitoring and reporting. Failure to perform these duties properly could result in the Veteran not receiving the treatment to which he/she is entitled or priority access to care to which he/she is entitled. The lack of coordination provided by this employee could negatively impact upon clinical and/or administrative functions. A large part of the duties includes functions such as serving as an initial point of contact for the units, clinics, patient, call centers, CITC, to include, but not limited to, scheduling patient appointments, tracking, reviewing, and responding to electronic orders, consults, and other elements in the electronic medical record and medical systems. This series includes work that requires a practical knowledge of computerized data entry, information processing systems and software related to patient care, the healthcare system's organization and services, basic rules and regulations governing visitors and patient treatment, knowledge of standard procedures, utilizing medical records, and medical terminology. The work is mostly sedentary and is performed in Care in the Community.

Veterans Health Administration (VHA) manages one of the largest health care systems in the United States. The mission of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System is to provide coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health services and extended care to veterans in a timely, accessible and cost-effective manner. The Fort Wayne Campus offers primary and secondary medical and surgical services. The Marion Campus offers a full range of psychiatry services, nursing home care, and extended care services. Primary care clinics are available at both campuses and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in South Bend, Goshen, Peru, Huntington, and Muncie, Indiana and Defiance, Ohio.
