This is a permanent full-time position. Incumbent MUST have a valid State Water Operator license before entrance on duty and will be responsible for possessing and maintaining an Indiana Water Operator License within 6 months of entrance on duty.
Must have the ability to plan for and determine materials and tools needed for assigned task. Install, modify and make repairs to new and existing systems such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems and water closets, showers, fire sprinkler systems, and backflow preventers. Lay out of such things as angles, arcs, and circles. Lays sewer tile, replaces stools lavatories and replaces pumps.
Works from building plans, blueprints and sketches to plan and lay out routing, placement, slant, slope fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Independently lays out and completes installations, modifications and repairs. Possesses skills in accepted trade methods and techniques, such as wiping and pouring lead joints, seating equipment and installing any combination of couplings, union, and joints needed for proper operation of the systems. Also skilled in the use of the plumb bobs, mercury gages, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps and lead pots.
Applies best practices following state and federal regulations to ensure proper operation and maintenance of microbiological and physical chemical processes for efficient treatment of potable water distribution systems. Will operate hypochlorinators, solution tanks, pressure tanks, valves, mixed media filters, and reciprocating pumps associated with surface water and well water operations.
Assists other maintenance employees in completing a variety of basic carpentry, roofing, electrical and building and utility maintenance.
Have the ability to rehabilitate, modify and assemble from blueprints, sketches and verbal instructions.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand wile working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
AREA INFORMATION: Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. The park is among the top 10 most visited National Park units annually. Small towns and resort communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan, and farms, interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands, surround the park. All services are available in the communities, to include schools, colleges, shopping, and other major amenities. The park hugs 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, and includes several historic districts, and over 50 miles of horse, bike and hiking trails over rugged dunes, mysterious wetlands, sunny prairies, meandering rivers, and peaceful forests! The park also surrounds the 2,000-acre Indiana Dunes State Park, and a large residential environmental education center. The Park is the birthplace of the science of ecology and has one of the most diverse plant communities in the National Park Service system. The park further supports several geographically dispersed units within the park. The area has weather typical of the Midwest with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. No government housing available, however, many reasonably priced houses and rental properties exist in the surrounding communities.
