This position is located with the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS). NDMS supports state, local, tribal and territorial (SLTT) authorities following disasters and emergencies by supplementing health and medical systems and response capabilities. The HHS Office of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, in its role as Coordinator of Emergency Support Function 8 (ESF-8), Public Health and Medical Services, of the National Response Framework, employs the NDMS to provide patient care, patient movement, and definitive care, as well as veterinary services, and fatality management support when requested by authorities from states, localities, tribes and territories, or other federal departments. In a disease outbreak, they may provide mass prophylaxis. During a special event, they stand ready to serve in case of an emergency. But no matter what the specific mission is, NDMS teams provide expert patient care that protects individual health and promotes national health security.
The incumbent carries out complex assignments using a variety of nursing skills to provide the full range of nursing care to patients. Assignments may involve provision of comprehensive nursing care in multiple specialized areas.
Responsible for leading and coordinating nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards.
Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.
Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends and families.
Has oversight and responsibility for coordinating the completion of all required reports and maintenance of records.
A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must be accredited by Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education , Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education , or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.
NDMS does NOT allow DUAL FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT which applies to current full-time federal employees. (this does not apply to contractors for the federal government).
NDMS intermittent employees serve on a rotational on-call schedule and deploy as intermittent federal employees when ASPR activates them in a declared federal emergency response or as part of a national special security event. A response mission is typically up to 14 days with a possibility of a short extension, based on the mission. Team members must be committed to staying at the disaster site for up to two weeks.
Employees must be capable of review and approval by a standardized systematic Credentialing and Privileging process. If credentials and privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including, removal from Federal service. If required, applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.

The incumbent may be required to travel on short notice to disaster areas with only minimal comforts, including requirements to eat military-style rations (such as Meals, Ready to Eat (MRE) due to limited or no access to commercially available food. Extended and frequent travel may be required and will be governed by the need for the incumbent to fully cover all emergency preparedness responsibilities (i.e. disasters, meetings, exercises, etc.). This travel may depend upon the number and type of events or emergencies that may occur.
