Summary

This position is located in Nutrition and Food Service at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in VISN 10. Nutrition and Food Service is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care to veteran patients at the Medical Center. The primary purpose of the Food Service Worker, WG-2 position is to perform basic, routine food service tasks made up of a sequence of steps and that require attention to work operations, sanitation, and safety.

Major Duties:

  • Reviews work sheets and menus to identify food items, portion sizes, and number of portions needed.
  • Sets up and replenishes serving lines with dishware, napkins, condiments, and hot and cold food items.
  • Sets up and serves on tray line stations (starter, loader, desserts, salads and beverages, main plate, modified diet) reading menu, diet cards and/or tray tickets and placing food items listed.
  • Assembles bulk food and operates rethermalization equipment for cafeteria-style service.
  • Serves cafeteria-style, portioning food for customers according to menu, tray tickets, and/or preferences.
  • Serves tray/meal items using point of service style meal service following master menus, tray tickets, or diet cards as guidance.
  • Checks that tray and food carts are at proper temperature prior to meal service. Records temperatures of food and equipment and reports discrepancies.
  • Sets up late trays from pre-assembled trays. Seeks guidance from higher-grade employee or supervisor when unfamiliar with a diet restriction and appropriate food items for a tray.
  • Washes, peels, and cuts fruit and vegetables by hand or machine. Assembles and mixes salad ingredients and dessert items. Portions, plates, and garnishes salads, desserts and beverages.
  • Assembles sandwiches and cold plates for nourishments and meals.
  • Covers, labels, dates, and stores leftovers.
  • Transports food delivery carts by hand or motorized vehicle to wards.
  • Loads and unloads tray carts onto/off delivery truck.
  • Delivers tray carts to and from rethermalization rooms, docks, carts.
  • Passes and collects patient trays according to procedure.
  • Returns soiled trays, pans, and utensils for cleaning and sanitation.
  • Breaks down and clean as serving lines and tray line stations after each meal period and returns food supplies and soiled dishware to designated areas.
  • Scrapes, sorts, soaks and racks dishware, glasses and silverware. Leads and unloads machine. Scrubs cooking utensils and pans using utilizing three-sink and/or machine washing methods.
  • Sorts, stacks, and returns clean dishware, utensils, and pans to work areas.
  • Operates washing machines; checks detergent level and water temperature. Cleans washing machines and work areas after a meal. Deep cleans and de-limes washing equipment by removing doors, screens, strainer pans and spray arms as assigned.
  • Cleans and sanitizes sinks, worktables, refrigerators, steam tables, racks, carts, dish dollies, and other equipment. Washes dining room tables and chairs.
  • Collects trash and transports to disposal area. Sorts and prepares items for recycling.
  • Cleans Floors, walls, shelves.
  • Performs deep cleaning tasks such as scrubbing and waxing floors, and cleaning walk-in refrigerators and freezers. May operate powered floor cleaning or steam equipment for deep cleaning.
  • Labels all food items with contents and dates per labeling guidelines.
  • Breaks down and stores deliveries. Rotates and stores perishable and non-perishable items.
  • Gathers requisitioned food and disposable items for ward delivery.
  • Cleans and stocks shelves.
  • Maintains strict security of all areas.
  • Gathers and assembles food and beverage items for nourishments and standing orders.
  • Assembles bulk snacks and box lunches.
  • Sorts nourishments for ward delivery. Adheres printed labels on supplements, tube feedings, nourishments items per labeling guidelines.
  • Delivers nourishments, tube feedings, and wad stock to proper locations. Checks expiration dates and discards items according to guidelines for ward food storage.
Work Schedule: 2/3 weekends, 6am-2:30pm, 11am-7:30pm, 6am-10am, 3:30pm-7:30pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/18/2022.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Is subject to continuous standing, walking, frequent bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance of a lifting device or other workers. Manipulates cumbersome, heavy objects, such as washing stainless steel mixing bowls, pushing heavy carts on casters or operating heavy cleaning equipment. Possesses manual dexterity to operate equipment and to handle sharp knives and blades safely. Utilizes eye-hand coordination and the ability to concentrate and react quickly to serve food and operate motorized carts/towing vehicles.

Working Conditions: Performs work in areas of extremes of temperature. Work is carried out in kitchen/dish room areas that are often hot and uncomfortable. Environment includes exposure to extreme cold while working in walk-in refrigerators and freezers. Is exposed to steam, cooking odors, and noise from equipment and conversation. Is subject to hazards of cuts, bruises, strains, burns and falls in kitchen environment. Uses strong cleaning and sanitizing solutions which may be skin and respiratory irritants frequently. Performs work in patient care settings where there may be exposure to contagious disease. May have contact with patients who demonstrate verbally and/or physical aggressive behavior.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
