This vacancy is open to current, permanent employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers with first preference given to current John D. Dingell VA Medical Center facility employees.
The incumbent provides religious, spiritual, and pastoral care to all persons that are commensurate with the needs, desires, and voluntary consent of the Veteran, caregiver, or staff. The incumbent addresses the spiritual component of health and wellness in every patient care setting to ensure that pastoral care is fully integrated into all aspects of service. The incumbent serves in a developmental Chaplain capacity under the direct supervision and frequent guidance of a higher-grade chaplain for complex non-routine assignments. The incumbent performs the majority or all the following major duties and responsibilities.
Loss of Endorsement or Certification. Chaplains must maintain ecclesiastical endorsement and board certification. Loss of endorsement or board certification will result in removal from the GS-0060 Chaplain occupation and may result in termination of employment.

Additional Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and will be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient and departmental needs. The position will require the candidate to walk short and long distances in a hospital setting up to 4 hours per day. At times, this may include use of stairs but no other climbing. This position will require the candidate to read a computer screen and other documents for extended period of times for up to 4-5 hours consecutively and will require ability to communicate verbally via the phone, in person to other employees and perform presentations to committees and groups of people. Corrected vision via glasses or contacts is appropriate and use of a hearing aid or other device in order to correct hearing to within normal adult frequencies is allowed and appropriate. Use of fingers to type on computer keyboard, sign documents, etc. is required.
