To qualify for this position, you must meet both the Basic Education requirements for the Geology, 1350 series AND the minimum experience or education qualification for the GS-11 grade level.
Basic Education Requirements for the 1350 Series: A degree in Geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. You must provide a copy of your transcripts.

A combination of education and experience: course work as describe above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences. Experience that involved only one phase of geology work, e.g., collecting samples, would not be acceptable as providing the required professional knowledge of the theory and principles of geology. You must provide a copy of your transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or next lower pay band in the Federal sector or equivalent experience in the public or private sector performing the following duties: 1) Develop portions of the long range programming for the minerals program. 2) Develops, implements and updates the geology and minerals portion of the district planning system that could include inventories, opportunities for development, economic data, and possible conflicts with other programs. 3) Provide written and oral assistance to the public on questions concerning the laws, regulations, and policy governing all aspects of mineral resources on public lands. 4) Reviews the exploration or development/operating plan for adequacy and recommends the amount of bond to be required.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a related field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond 2 years by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Physical Demands: The work is a combination of office and fieldwork. Fieldwork may involve strenuous walking, riding off-road vehicles (4x4, UTV, etc.), and climbing over rough and mountainous terrain. Duties of the position require physical stamina and agility. Work involves heavy lifting, bending, and climbing. Work may also include lifting moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples.
Working Conditions: Office work is performed in a lighted and ventilated room. Fieldwork is performed on varying levels of terrain (from flat to steep and rocky terrain.) The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife and chemical and physical hazards. The incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer. Temperatures vary to over 100F.
