The Director of Glenn Research Center leads and has overall accountability for several of NASA's premier institutions, including the John H. Glenn Research Center and the Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility. The Director of Glenn Research Center is a member of NASA's Agency leadership team and is responsible for driving, enabling, and delivering NASA's missions, priorities, and programs.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Leads strategic planning and management of research and development efforts in aeronautics, exploration, science, space operations, and space technology to expand and strengthen workforce skills and technical capabilities to meet NASA mission objectives.
- Leads multi-disciplinary teams in critical Agency capabilities, such as aeronautical propulsion, space power propulsion, cryogenic fluids, microgravity science, expendable launch vehicles, space communications, materials, structures, instrumentation and control, computational fluid dynamics and electronics.
- Partners with Agency Mission Directorates, Centers, Technical Authorities, and Mission Support organizations to drive and implement Agency requirements and mitigate risk.
- Fosters a culture of engagement, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation through collaborations with thought leaders from within and outside of NASA. Actively engages with external partners, including national, international, governmental, local, academic, and industry stakeholders. Champions and enables new business and partnership opportunities. Additionally, extends these technologies to non-aerospace applications which enhance the U.S. economic posture.
- Creates an environment and culture that promotes and enables the Agency's commitment to Safety, Inclusion, Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence. Champions the agency's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility strategic plan and programs.
- Develops innovative solutions and strategic direction that drive change, further the agency's mission, and deepen Research and Development (R&D) and leadership capabilities across Glenn Research Center, Armstrong Test Facility, and other agency locations.
- Demonstrates success in driving breakthrough technology strategies - leads the Center in new technology development initiatives from concept to commercialization.
- Serves as a key member in providing recommendations and decisions on Agency governance councils, Strategic Management Councils, Program Reviews, Flight Readiness Reviews, etc.
A degree in engineering, science, or equivalent field of study is preferred.
