Ecologist Basic Requirement
Basic education requirements qualify for the GS-05 grade level.
Degree: Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualification requirement to be considered for:
For GS-07 level
Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through federal service. Specialized experience is described as, entry-level or trainee level experience such as utilizing basic professional concepts, principles, and methodology of biological sufficient to participate in ecology and soil-vegetation (i.e., rangeland, forestland, cropland, etc.) relationships; and the ability to use computerized databases and inventory tools, to manipulate and enter Ecological Site Description information.

Education Substitute: One (1) or more years of graduate level education in a directly related discipline;
OR
Superior Academic Achievement in a bachelor's degree curriculum directly related to the work of the position. To qualify for superior academic achievement, you must have ONE of the following: (1) standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision at the time you apply; (2) grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; (3) B+ (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a related discipline, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR (4) election to membership in one of the national honorary scholastic societies that meets the requirements of the Association of College Honor Society;
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy.
For GS-09 level
Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level or higher, or comparable experience not gained through federal service. Specialized experience is described as, advanced-trainee level experience such as assisting in environmental investigations, application of inventory and classification in unique and/or diverse ecosystems; describing and classifying soil and vegetation dynamics in plant communities; developing, writing, and/or analyzing environmental impact statements, categorical exclusions, and other documents, in order to make assessments into formats suitable for Ecological Site Descriptions.

Education Status: Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two (2) years; or individuals who, due to military service obligation, were precluded from applying to the Recent Graduates Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period described above shall have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon release or discharge from active duty. This eligibility period cannot extend more than 6 years from the date on which the requirements for the academic course of study were met.
