Learn more about
The High Energy Physics (HEP) program seeks to understand how our universe works at its most fundamental level by discovering the most elementary constituents of matter and energy, exploring basic nature of space and time itself, and probing the interactions between them. To enable these discoveries, HEP supports theoretical and experimental research in both elementary particle physics and fundamental accelerator science and technology. HEP underpins and advances the DOE missions and objectives through this research, and by the development of key technologies and trained personnel needed to work at the cutting edge of science. HEP partners with other agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to engage their scientific and technical expertise, coordinating interagency efforts to ensure effective and efficient progress. HEP solicits advice from Federal advisory committees and organizations like the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to periodically review HEP's role in the nation and provide advice on the formulation of long-range plans, priorities, and strategies, such as the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) report. Additionally, HEP manages three scientific user facilities at DOE national laboratories and supports the Large Hadron Collider program at (European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
