Help

The purpose of this ECHO Fellowship opportunity is to improve and study statistical elements of probabilistic coastal compound hazard analysis.
Conducting interdisciplinary studies in the areas of inland flooding, coastal flooding, atmospheric sciences and precipitation.
Applying and improving statistical techniques, joint probability methods and machine-learning approaches in Matlab and/or Python.
Researching and applying foundation concepts of probability and statistics to assess frequency, severity, and uncertainty of natural hazards.
Develop a robust framework for extending Joint Probability Methods (JPM) to include rainfall processes for analysis of compound coastal storm and precipitation hazards.
Conducting probabilistic assessment of coastal storm hazards that includes compound flood processes, (i.e. precipitation-induced flooding as well as storm surge) to properly characterize risk at coastal/inland transition zones.
Quantifying coastal compound hazard to plan, design, and ascertain risk in support of Regional coastal projects, Research and Development studies, flood-risk mapping, and emergency response activities.
Present research to technical and non-technical audiences.

This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
This is a Modified Term position scheduled to last 2 Years. A modified term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
Appointment to this position may lead to a subsequent noncompetitive conversion to a permanent appointment.
Term employment is subject to a one year trial period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the basic education requirements described below. Preferred Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Preferred Experience: The successful candidate should have strong skills in applying foundation concepts of probability and statistics to assess frequency, severity, and uncertainty of natural hazards. A solid background in applying and improving statistical techniques, joint probability methods and machine-learning approaches in Matlab and/or Python is preferred. Experience crossing interdisciplinary specialties and in the areas of inland flooding, coastal flooding, atmospheric sciences and precipitation would be beneficial.

Preferred Areas of Ph.D: The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. demonstrating strong skills in applying foundation concepts of probability and statistics to assess frequency, severity, and uncertainty of natural hazards.

To Qualify: Applicants must meet one of the following basic education requirements: Research Geographer, Research General Engineer, Research Civil Engineer, Research Civil Engineer (Hydraulics), Research Mechanical Engineer, Research Computer Engineer, Research Physical Scientist, Research Physicist, Research Hydrologist, Research Oceanographer, Research Mathematician, Research Computer Scientist.

This type of research is performed by those who have backgrounds for the occupations stated above. The final classification of the position will be made by the Human Resources Office.
