As a Research Hydrologist within the Geologic Hazards Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Key Requirements:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:
1. Knowledge of and experience with principles and practices of modern research methods in studies of geologic hazards, including methods in modeling geomechanical and hydrological processes related to landslides.
2. Ability to conduct field and laboratory investigations to quantify hillslope hydrology, infiltration, and runoff processes.
3. Ability to develop, adapt, and apply physically based, geomechanical and hydrological models to describe hillslope hydrology related to landslide initiation.
4.Knowledge of hydrology, geology, geomorphology, and rock and soil mechanics to map, describe, analyze, and interpret landslide features and assess potential hazards.
5. Ability to communicate research results and interpretations to colleagues, non-scientists and the general public. This includes presentation of research results and technical materials to technical and non-technical audience including both oral and written forms of communication via presentations at scientific or technical meetings, technical committee work, and communications to the media and general public.
