The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 or 1730 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
Assists the Trails Supervisor in planning the personnel, equipment and supply needs for the district's trail maintenance and construction programs, including cyclic maintenance and utilization of groups such as volunteer and conservation groups. Assigns and distributes work to subordinates by verbal and written orders. Explains and demonstrates work and living requirements, methods, and procedures to crew members. Provides and produces detailed documents and reports for accurate planning and scheduling of work. Knowledge of trail practices and methods to maintain, rehabilitate, and construct trails for hiking and stock. Incumbent must have knowledge of and be able to perform such duties as instructing/operating rock drills, chain saws, power and hand winches & rigging as well as other technical jobs, and laboring tasks using common trail hand tools. Provides input to Supervisor for employee performance appraisals. Applicant must be able to work and live cooperatively with other individuals under primitive conditions for prolonged periods of time.
Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 lbs., must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel and other hand tools extensively; Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous terrain at elevations between 2,000 to 10,000 ft in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around livestock or explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
1,730 Waiver Information: Only for approved positions in identified geographic locations, the Not to Exceed limit for seasonal temporary time limited appointments is increased to 1,730 hours which will be determined upon selection.
