Summary
This position is part of the Aquatic Resource Management Division located at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. As a Biological Science Technician, the Lab Director incumbent will manage the Water Lab and work closely with the Aquatic Branch Lead. The Lab Director will provide training and guidance for aquatic invasive species and water quality monitoring through the use of lab-and field-based techniques at the Wahweap Water Lab, and work closely with state and federal partners on monitoring operations. The primary station will be at the NPS Wahweap Water Lab, ca. 8 miles north of Page.
Responsibilities
This position is responsible for maintaining the Wahweap Water Lab through regular certifications and consultations with state and federal partners. The incumbent will help with molecular laboratory operations of an invasive species (quagga and zebra mussels) monitoring and early detection program. Work involves annual certifications, quality control and quality assurance methods, collecting samples for water quality sampling at Lake Powell beaches, and support for other water-based operation at Glen Canyon. Work may involve some troubleshooting and optimization of methods and lab techniques and protocols. Other duties include supervision of up to 2-3 technicians working on water quality and related monitoring activities, operating a microscope and other standard laboratory equipment, using computers to manage data and to produce reports, managing laboratory records, conducting primary literature research and application of findings, collaboration with other subject matter experts, and training other staff in these tasks.
