This position is with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) National Marine Fisheries Service and will be part of a facility maintenance team responsible for building, equipment, infrastructure, and/or utility maintenance and operations at Auke Bay Laboratories (ABL) including the Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute, Little Port Walter Research Facility, the Juneau Subport, and the Auke Creek Hatchery.
This position is primarily responsible for the facility’s refrigeration equipment and air conditioning as well as responsible for office, laboratory, shop, storage, chilled water plants and support equipment including complex seawater pumping, filtering, and treatment systems, chillers, boilers, and back-up power generation. Work performed includes the general trade areas of mechanical, structural, electrical, HVAC, vessel, vehicle, roads and grounds, and facility maintenance. This position must be able to perform maintenance and repair work for grounds, structures, building and related fixtures, facilities and utilities without more than normal supervision to support the missions of the facility.
As a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-10, you will also perform the following duties:
Physical Effort: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds.

* This position requires a Low Risk Security Clearance.
Conditions of employment:
• This position requires the operation of a Federal motor vehicle. Incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license to drive a federal motor vehicle on a regular and recurring basis.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operators certification, NOAA small boat operators’ qualifications.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR Certification, AED Certification and a First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire.
• Position may be required to perform travel, which may be for periods up to several weeks at a time.
• Work may be performed in remote locations.
Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area maybe dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles. The incumbent will be required to travel periodically to our facility at the Little Port Walter Research Facility (LPW). They will need to be flexible enough to respond to facility needs at any location at any time. Logistics management and the ability to operate independently at a remote site for the support of the staff and programmatic needs are also a significant component of this position. The incumbent will be part of a rotating on call pool of personnel responding to emergencies after hours and on weekends, and will be called upon for snow removal prior to normal hours of operation in the winter months.
