Works with journeyman level Tree Worker and sawyers on Hazard Tree assessment and mitigation. Clear trails, roads, and public areas of downed trees, branches, and debris by use of chainsaw, powered equipment, and hand tools. Safely uses and maintain hand saws, axes, chainsaws, tractor with attachments, skid steer, forklift, aerial lift, woodchipper, trucks, and trailers. Works on trails and road maintenance including decks, boardwalks drains, and brushing.
Works with volunteers, youth corps, and park staff on projects and incidents. Actively participates in safety trainings and follows safety policies.
Maintains campground facilities and picnic areas with mowers, chippers, and blowers. Moves logs, maintains lawns and grounds, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, and cleans fire pits. Installs fencing, signs, benches, barricades, and gates. Rehabilitates disturbed sites to natural condition. Assists custodial personal and performs individually custodial duties for shop restrooms and common areas.
Loads, secures, and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort.
Works off ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lift to access roofs for repairs and trees for trimming. Performs several different tasks to complete installation and repairs to decks, boardwalks, trail bridges, stairs, signs, and historical structures throughout the Park.
AREA INFORMATION: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within a beautiful scenic resort area on the shores of Lake Michigan, approximately 25 miles west of Traverse City, Michigan. The Lakeshore includes North and South Manitou Island which are located approximately seven miles off shore in Lake Michigan. Travel between the mainland and the islands is limited, so staff working on the islands are provided transportation and island housing at no charge. On the mainland, housing, medical facilities, shopping, laundry facilities, churches, banks, daycare, cultural and recreational opportunities are readily available within a 30 mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-90 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Shared government housing may be available for rent. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
