NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed thirteen (13) months). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than one (1) year but not more than four (4)). Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Electrical:
Identifies basic electrical problems and performs the repairs/upgrades required to ensure
safe working and living environments throughout the facility.
Performs routine repairs of electrical fixtures, devices and equipment requiring the removal and replacement, etc.
Repairs or replaces switches, controls, circuit breakers, pumps, receptacles, lighting fixtures, cord and plug assemblies.

Carpentry:
Operates and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operate
and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet
required specifications.
Plans measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques.

Plumbing:
Repairs plumbing systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility,
supply, and disposal systems.
Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and
fixtures including; water closets; urinals; lavatories; tubs, fire sprinkler systems, faucets;
hose bibs; and showers.
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing,
placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment. Uses
tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers,
hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots.

Mechanical / Heating and Refrigeration Systems:
Maintenance Mechanic should have some experience in the operation, installation,
repair, modification and preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning
(HVAC) and refrigeration equipment/systems including their associated controls.
Interprets blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technician manuals, and be knowledgeable in shop math and standard formulas.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Maintenance Mechanic may install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment or components from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems that are cramped, dirty and at hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to fifty (50lbs.) pounds. Occasionally, the Maintenance Mechanic will be required to lift and carry items over fifty (50lbs) pounds.
The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside conditions, and is
generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in extreme inclement weather. The incumbent may
be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents
are present. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are
maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use
of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance
programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty.
The Maintenance Mechanic may be subject to bruises, cuts, scrapes, burns and other minor
injuries.

WORK CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in all areas of the Domiciliary/Transitional housing environment, inside and
outside, in cramped areas, and at times in extreme temperatures. The incumbent is exposed
to dust/dirt/grease while cleaning equipment, preparing surfaces for treatment, and handling
materials.
The Maintenance Mechanic is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions.
He/she is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and
burns. He/She is subject chemicals, which can cause burns or irritation to the skin.
Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy
and uncomfortable. Typical safety equipment required by the trade is safety shoes, safety
glasses, dust/respiratory masks, earplugs, hard hats, etc.
