As a Supervisory Marine Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
● Act as a supervisor for the Shellfish Assessment Program at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) Kodiak Laboratory. Perform a full range of supervisory functions, including workload planning and distribution and evaluation of subordinate performance.
● Participate in the full cycle of research, including development of ideas/hypotheses, experimental design, analysis of data, and presentation and peer-reviewed publication of research results.
● Perform administrative tasks to support the continued success of the Shellfish Assessment Program in the Kodiak Lab, including procurement, budget planning and execution, and facilities management.
● Represent the Shellfish Assessment Program in interactions with fisheries stakeholders, other AFSC programs, and external collaborators.
● Play a leadership role in planning and execution for the annual bottom trawl survey of Bering Sea crab populations and crab research in the Kodiak saltwater lab.
This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.
Salary for selectee's pay may be set at any point within the pay band except for intervals 4 and 5 ($1111,544 - $118,336) which is reserved for supervisory performance or for current supervisors within CAPS who already have a salary within intervals 4 and 5.
The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position requires the operation of a Federal motor vehicle.
This position requires at-sea deployments for up to 60 days per year with individual trips up to 30 days each.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Incumbent will be exposed to weather and various sea states, over long, odd hours, repeated lifting, and moving heavy equipment or biological samples (50 lbs.), on an unsteady deck, depending on sea state.

To qualify at the 0401 series:
A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the ZP-3 or GS-11 level:
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience listed above. Note: Only graduate education in excess of two years is qualifying for combination.

You must submit evidence that any education completed in a foreign institution is equivalent to U.S. education standards with your resume.
