At the entry level of this position, you will:
- Contribute to the identification, interpretation, evaluation, analysis, and synthesis of scientific and other data for the development of human health and/or environmental assessments of environmental or occupational chemical exposures;
- Communicate analyses, research results, and develop and maintain professional relationships essential to the position;
- Provide technical expertise, assistance, and advice to support programmatic and research efforts;
- Contribute to the identification, planning, and implementation of research to develop and/or improve scientific methods used in assessments.
When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses.

These positions are designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.
If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-11 level you must have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-9 level defined as reviewing and preparing materials for published, peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies focusing on environmental, public health, or occupational exposures; and particapating in team research of epidemiologic/public health/occupational exposure studies;
- OR a PhD in a field directly related to this position
-OR a combination of education and experience equivalent to the above.
To qualify for the GS-12 Level you must have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as participating in the review and critical evaluation of published, peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies focusing on environmental or occupational exposures including analysis of individual study results and interpretation of evidence across sets of studies; and assisting with the design and analysis of epidemiologic population-based health studies that measure and quantify the health effects of environmental exposures in human populations; and publishing research results in peer reviewed publications.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of the health impacts of environmental or occupational chemical exposures; 2) Skill in using existing sources to develop new environmental assessments; 3) Skill in oral communication; 4) Skill in written communication; 5) Ability to provide advice and support to colleagues and supervisors and/or management to support research; 6) Ability to adapt to existing approaches and develop new approaches to current assessments.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in the following: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences related to the work of this position.
