At the GS5 level, you will:
- Complete developmental assignments that expand the understanding of concepts, underlying principles, and program requirements and procedures;
- Assist in summarizing environmental program information data for use in preparing reports and program evaluations;
- Perform routine tasks in science studies of a standard nature on regulatory and compliance issues and problems;
- Support high-graded staff in planning for program management of environmental programs;
- Review literature for assessment and information gathering.
At the GS7 level, you will:
- Analyze and summarize a variety of environmental program information data for use in preparing reports and program evaluations;
- Perform science studies of a standard nature on regulatory and compliance issues and problems;
- Prepare initial recommendations for solutions to be reviewed by higher-graded staff;
- Support higher-graded staff in planning for program management of environmental programs;
- Assist staff in preparation of materials for, and participation in, briefings with managers.
At the GS9 level, you will:
- Independently perform recurring, well-precedented regulatory and compliance projects which require use of standard methods and techniques.
- Perform and monitor the full range of standard procedures in regulatory and compliance work.
- Analyze and summarize a variety of environmental program information data for use in preparing reports and program evaluations.

To qualify for the GS-05 level, you need to have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree.
To qualify for the GS-07 level, you need to have completed one full academic year of graduate level education; or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (Superior Academic Achievement Definition).
To qualify for the GS-09 level, you need to have completed two academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.
