Serves as a front-line representative of the agency and frequently you are the first and only contact the visiting public has with an NPS employee. You work at a visitor center, campground or other visitor contact station, collecting fees and providing answers to visitor questions about recreational opportunities, interpretive services, and concession facilities and services. You distribute maps and brochures, provide directions through the park and inform visitors of potential safety hazards. As you're responsible for collecting fees and following accountability guidelines for handling government funds, you must pass a required background investigation. May perform campground duties such as collecting fees, monitoring campground self-registration collection activities, checking site availability, and conduct compliance checks of campground users to ensure proper payment of fees. Safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock. Other duties may include a variety of visitor services such as traffic control, radio dispatching or backcountry patrols.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting or moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight.
Duty Station Yellville - The worksite is the Buffalo Point Visitor Contact Station. The nearest community of Yellville has a population is 2,000 people located in north central Arkansas, about 30 miles south of the Arkansas-Missouri state line. Government rental housing may be available in Yellville. Mountain Home, AR is located 25 miles to the east with a population of approximately 11,000 people. There are several rental properties, within Mountain Home, Harrison and Yellville.
Duty Station Ponca - near Marble Falls, Arkansas, formerly known as Dogpatch, Arkansas. The nearest town is Jasper, AR which offers most services found in small towns, such as a grocery store, hardware store, several small restaurants and K-12 public schools. Marble Falls is approximately 60 miles south of the Arkansas-Missouri state line. Harrison is located 30 miles east and has a population of approximately 14,000 people. Harrison offers K-12 schools, a community college, restaurants, shopping, groceries, a movie theatre, a performing arts theatre, a hospital, and specialized clinics. There are several rental properties, as well as of homes to purchase within Harrison and Boone County.
Duty Location St. Joe: The duty station is located in St Joe, Arkansas. St. Joe is a town of approximately 85 people located in north central Arkansas, about 60 miles south of the Arkansas-Missouri state line. Harrison is located 35 miles north and has a population of approximately 14,000 people. Harrison offers K-12 schools, a community college, restaurants, shopping, groceries, a movie theatre, a performing arts theatre, a hospital, and specialized clinics.
Duty location Republic Missouri: Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is located 10 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri (population 175,000). All services can be found in Springfield and surrounding communities. A variety of housing can be found in Springfield and surrounding communities. No government housing is available.
