This position serves as a geologist in a Bureau of Land Management Office. The incumbent plans, initiates, directs and exercises supervision over mining industry sales, permits, and leases to assure the orderly development and conservation of mineral materials, locatable and leasable minerals on public lands. The incumbent is responsible for developing long range programming for the minerals program. Develops, implements and updates the geology and minerals portion of the district planning system. Incumbent processes applications and reviews exploration, mining and operating plans related to salable and locatable mineral development. Provides technical expertise in surface protection, inspection, enforcement and trespass. Develops and implements the geology and minerals portion of the district planning system. Participates in projects for development of environmental documents following National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements.

Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.
Physical Demands: The individual works primarily in an office setting at this level. There may be some walking, standing, or bending. The individual may also, on occasion be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, and perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples.
Work Environment: The work is performed primarily in an office setting. However when necessary to complete the work, there may be outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure requires some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.
Specialized Experience Requirements: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must also have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the next lower grade level (GS-09 for the GS-11, directly related education, or a combination of directly related education and experience in geological field work. To qualify for the GS-11: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, applicants must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in geology related work. Examples of specialized experience includes: Applying established technology in routine ways to well-defined, moderate sized geological projects; Planning and carrying out routine geological work; and organizing geological work by following prescribed methods and guidelines and recognizing conditions and results that may affect the findings OR; In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants may use education to qualify for this position, as follows: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or, Ph.D. or, equivalent doctoral degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study OR; In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants may combine education and experience to qualify for this position as follows: Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent.
