Reclamation is seeking a career professional looking for an opportunity to capitalize on his/her experience as a Civil Engineer (Hydrologic) or Hydrologist. You can make a difference in the West by assisting in meeting increasing water demands while protecting the environment.

MAJOR DUTIES
- Applies hydrologic and/or engineering knowledge to a broad variety of water operations and water accounting situations.
- Continues development of the computer models used for river operations and accounting in collaboration with other members of the multi-agency technical team.
- Acts as liaison to the model software developers and to other government agencies working with models and sub-parties to Reclamation's contract with the model developers.
- Provides project management and technical proposals, analyses, evaluation, and oversight for assigned engineering, environmental, biological, and/or hydrologic projects and activities for the AAO.
- Coordinates with multiple agencies in database and model development and maintenance.
- Analyzes river and reservoir losses, river routings, streamflow forecasting, water releases, diversions and returns, operational plans, and related problems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Work occasionally involves field data observation and collection activities, traversing river flood plains covered with dense overgrowth and under adverse climatic conditions. Occasional field work is performed out-of-doors requiring standing, walking, and travel over rough terrain. Field work requires special safety precautions such as boots, coats, goggles, gloves, and safety hats. Field work may be performed during adverse weather conditions such as snow, rain, subfreezing temperatures, and hot temperatures exceeding 100 degrees-F.

MINIMUM EDUCATION: CIVIL ENGINEERING (HYDROLOGIC) DISCIPLINE, GS-810:
A. Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics; (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics; such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience: college level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
1) Professional Registration: Current registration as a professional engineer. Proof must be submitted with application. If you have achieved registration by means other than a written test, you will be eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of your registration.
2) Written Test: Evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration.
3) Specified academic courses: Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum as described in paragraph A.
4) Related curriculum: Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g. physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology or geology may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: HYDROLOGIST DISCIPLINE, GS-1315:
A. Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics.

B. Combination of education and experience: course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the constant application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geochemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience.
In addition to meeting the basic education qualification requirement(s) described above, applicants must also possess the following:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience must demonstrate the applicant has been equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is directly related to the work to be performed.
GS-12: Your resume must reflect at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for the GS-12: Hydrology and/or Civil Engineering experience in at least 3 of the following: performing technical analyses of hydrologic data; performing hydraulic and routing studies; developing river and reservoir system plans; developing, adapting, and using existing computer models to solve hydraulic and hydrologic problems (e.g., reservoir operations plans, runoff forecasts, river and reservoir loss studies); and demonstrated experience with computer applications used to model hydraulics, hydrology, river and reservoir routing, and database management.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
