Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for is April to October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: mid-April to mid-May.
As a GS-06 Biological Science Technician (Plants) you will usually work under the direct supervision of experienced staff as a crew member for the vegetation monitoring program, but may be expected to perform some technical tasks independently with minimal supervision. Your duties will include collection of vegetation and environmental data in permanent plots. To perform duties effectively, you will need a strong foundation in the botanical sciences with systematic botany coursework specifically; you will need to be able to recognize plant species to the species level in the field (including some mosses and lichens). Under the direction of field staff you will assist in making voucher collections and taking detailed data on vegetation communities and will assist with data entry using multiple software platforms. You may also at times work with less experienced staff than yourself to collect tree cores from the permanent plots. Attention to detail and the ability to work in demanding field conditions carrying a heavy backpack and other field sampling equipment over steep and uneven terrain, including for long periods in inclement weather. You will be responsible of independently performing photo documentation of long term monitoring plots using digital cameras and use transect, quadrat and other methodologies to compile field data. This will include assisting less experienced field staff on occasion. You will be expected to measure tree diameter and heights and should be familiar with traditional forest mensuration methods. The incumbent may also assist with special projects including forest disturbance/fuels inventories, wetland studies, alpine monitoring and invasive plant management. Work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking and bending often required. Heavy items (packs and equipment) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Camping and hiking is often in country with high densities of brown or black bears.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending; crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to scuba dive or operate a boat. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.
