Duties
The incumbent supervises and coordinates the work of an interdisciplinary science/adaptation team that assists parks, and other NPS directorates, programs and disciplines in adapting to the effects of climate change. The Science and Adaptation Coordinator works closely with natural and cultural resources staffs, park superintendents, facility managers, planners, and visitor use specialists to assess vulnerability of NPS areas and assets to climate change and develop adaptation strategies. Exercises a full range of program management and supervisory duties for a professional and technical staff, including work planning, priority setting, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating performance. Translates scientific and other resource-related information on climate change to NPS managers and staff; recommends policy evolution or changes to assist park managers in meeting the NPS mission; addresses climate change vulnerabilities through management plans, adaptation strategies and decisions; and fosters collaboration to build understanding and coordinate landscape-scale adaptation. Develops, promotes, and maintains partnerships to enhance knowledge and best practices on climate change adaptation. Within the NPS and with partners, advises and assists the development of processes, products, tools, and activities to transfer scientific data and other information into sound, rigorous and effective management decisions and actions, including the use of scenarios, structured decision making, and other planning tools. Works closely with communication specialists to incorporate information about climate change impacts and actions into education, outreach, and training programs.
