The purpose of this position is to: (1) develop and implement an integrated program of natural, social , and cultural resources research and oversee resource research that supports NPS MWR units and national NPS resource program; (2) emphasis for this position is in riparian ecology, but position will coordinate all NPS/partner research programs; (3) develop partnerships and secure outside sources of support from Federal, State and academic, and private organizations in conducting cooperative research efforts; (4) as a permanent member of the national network of CESU's, provides the NPS with scientific/technical leadership in providing an integrated and responsive research program at the regional and service-wide levels

To qualify for this position as an Historian, GS-0170, you must meet the basic education/experience requirement:

- have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in history or a closely related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history or
- have a combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in history or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

To qualify for this position as an Archeologist, GS-0193, you must meet the basic education/experience requirement:

- have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part of portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, dating, field survey, and artifact and data analytical techniques); Archeological field school, provided a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND archeological field school AND related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements listed in A above (including archeological field school) or
- have a combination of education and experience that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination must have demonstrated that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of a full 4-year course study or
- have four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher level archeologist be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

To qualify for this position as a biologist, GS-0408, you must meet the basic education/experience requirement:

- successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position.
- have a combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major as shown in 3A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

To qualify for this position as a Ecologist, GS-0401, you must meet the basic education/experience requirement:

- Successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this positionOr A combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

To qualify for this position as a Anthropologist, GS-0190, you must meet the basic education/experience requirement.

- have successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in the appropriate field of anthropology or
- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education or
- four years of appropriate experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work.

AND
Minimum Qualifications. In additional to the basic education requirements, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: planning, development, and coordination of programs of natural resource management and research in disciplines such as climate change, ecology, geology, hydrology, marine ecology, integrated pest management, pesticides management, environmental restoration, resource monitoring, data management, and GIS. Development and maintaining external partnerships relative to natural resource management and/or science geared to protection of natural resources on park lands

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Physical Demands: The work involves the usual demands of the office setting as well as extended travel and occasional long work periods to meet deadlines. In addition, extended participation in projects in a wide variety of field and climate conditions may be necessary.

Working Conditions: Most of the work involves typical indoor office activity as well as the ability to travel and make field examinations of field study areas and resource problems areas in a wide variety of habitats under extremes ofd climate and terrain.
