Functions - Major Duties
These assignments require specialized training and experience. Employees must have advanced knowledge of complex equipment and specific attention to detail. The technologist performs highly specialized and complex examinations in interventional. The interventional specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy.

-The technologist independently reviews each patient requisition to assure that the patient's history and area of complaint is consistent with the exam requested.
-If a discrepancy exists, the technologist will make an independent determination, take the appropriate corrective action, including contacting the referring physician or nurse manager if necessary.
-The technologist will need to interview the patient to confirm clinical information. If some information indicates any contraindications, the technologist will consult with the Radiologist. If the radiologist is not available, the technologist may need to contact the clinician and/or the clinic the made the request for clarification.
-The technologist verifies the patient's identity using the JCAHO recommended method.
-The technologist verifies the patient's demographic information to be sure it is the correct and compatible with the DICOM format.
-The technologist may be part of the informed consent process and will routinely participate in the JCAHO required "Time-Out" process.
-The Technologist checks on the control panels, monitors and recorders for proper function and oversees the correct and proper settings of the radiographic equipment.
-The incumbent is solely responsible for all technical radiographic factors used.
-The Technologist also monitors the supplies and maintains stock necessary to perform all standard procedures.
-Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques and employing lead shielding when performing standard or fluoroscopic procedures.
-The technologist must be familiar with a wide variety of computerized equipment. This includes angiographic (IR) digital fluoroscopy, PACS viewing stations, and hospital computer systems such as VISTA and CPRS.
-The technologists must make continuous assessments of the image quality and equipment function for optimum performance. The technologist will determine if the image quality problem can be corrected independently or if the problem needs to be reported to the supervisor and or to Biomed.
-The technologist assists the Radiologist in the angio/interventional lab with procedures such chest thoracentesis, abdominal paracentesis, abscess drainage, TIPS procedure, peripheral vascular studies, stenting and coil placement for repair, Jejunal tube placement, chemo embolization's
(TACE) IVC filters, lumbar punctures, biopsies and localizations.
- The technologist can work in a surgical environment where sterile technique is practiced.
- The technologist must maintain the assigned room with proper medical and emergency supplies needed for optimal patient care and efficiency.
- The technologist will be required to wear a lead apron and be on their feet for an extended period.
- The technologist assists in record keeping that is necessary and takes an active role in Radiology and safety programs.
-Knowledge of PACS system (Picture, Archive, and Communication System)
-Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines.
-Ability to communicate with staff and Radiologists as well as nurses on the floor and the patient's health care provider.
-Comprehensive knowledge of safety practices and regulations.
-Ability to apply new scientific/ technical developments.
-Knowledge of instructional techniques to educate newly hired or promoted technologists or radiology residents of the function of the exams.

Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school Diagnostic Radiologic Technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an Associate's Degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in Radiology. (Transcripts or certification required with application.)
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). (Proof of certification required with application.)

GS-9 DRT

(a) Experience.
At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level:
GS-8 serves as a staff DRTs at the full performance level. Candidates at this grade level are to be qualified to provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services.

(b) Assignments.
For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
1. Advanced DRT.
Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*a. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
b. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;
*c. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
d. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
e. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and
f. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Physical Requirements: Work regularly involves extended periods of sitting. There is a considerable amount of moving, bending, and carrying moderately heavy articles. The transfer and positioning of patients who are disabled, unconscious or traumatized can require considerable effort of reaching, stretching and lifting in awkward positions due to respirators, suction machines and monitors. Assistance from special devices and other employees is recommended for heavy lifting.
