As the Physical Scientist for the Colorado River Valley Field Office, you will:
* Review and analyze scientific data provided by other specialists including hydrologists, air resource specialist, geologists, biologists, range management planners, and other land use planners to properly assess and report on the status of various environmental conditions;
* Develop programs and methods to conserve natural resources and prevent, remediate or remove contamination from the environment;
* Consult with various agencies, local government officials, special interest groups, and members of the general public;
* Provide scientific data input to interdisciplinary reports, environmental assessments, and protective stipulations for fragile ecosystems, and;
* Correlate environmental data and apply computer-based data analysis, mapping, and/or modeling techniques to simulate changes in air, water, soil and other factors that may affect the environment.
This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics -OR-
You must have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/ graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.

Specialized experience includes performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher-level scientists in carrying out physical science assignments. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; and independently completing recurring assignments, but referring deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to a designated person for decision or help. -OR-
(2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree -OR-
(3) COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of two years of graduate study leading to a masters degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent. For each period of your employment performing a combination of duties, please ensure that your resume shows the approximate percent of time you spent performing each different type of work.
To qualify for the GS-11 grade level, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
(1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level. Specialized experience is experience that includes independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine physical science work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, physical scientists have the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. -OR-
(2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree -OR-
(3) COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of three years of graduate study leading to a Ph.D. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.
