As a Physical Science Technician within the Geosciences & Environmental Chance Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Physical Demands
The work required will be performed primarily in an office or laboratory. However, data collection occurs in the field under a variety of conditions that may require considerable walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting. Agility is required to use hand tools and sampling equipment. Strength is required to lift weights of up to 40 pounds. At times, employee will be required work with hazardous chemicals and during those times they will be required to use all appropriate safety and protective equipment.
Work Environment
Work performed in the office occurs in moderate temperatures and well-lighted conditions, Fieldwork may occur year round, thus encountering and requiring work in a variety of weather conditions, including rain and snow. Field sites may include remote and/or otherwise difficult to access locations and may require hiking and camping overnight in back country conditions.

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-08 level assignments may include: experience planning, coordinating, and executing scientific investigations that include: (1) field work in remote locations, in order to collect samples and field data; (2) laboratory processing of environmental samples, particularly soils, and data collection; (3) experience developing numerical models or using statistical methods for analysis of field and laboratory data, particularly with code based statistical analyses or computer programming (Python / Matlab / R); (4) training or professional experience with geospatial analyses or mapping using Arc GIS or comparable software.
**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree or possession of a master's degree in the physical sciences or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.
**OR applicants may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 1 1/2 years of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
