As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Great Smoky Mountains National Park is February through December, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
This position is located in the Natural Resource Branch of the Resource Management and Science Division at Park Headquarters. The purpose of this position is to serve as the field crew leader for control of hemlock woolly adelgid in the park.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work requires strenuous off-trail hiking over rugged mountainous terrain, lifting and carrying items in excess of fifty pounds weight for long distances and prolonged physical labor, such as operating a chainsaw or large pumper engine. Fieldwork is year-round, regardless of inclement weather. Pesticides are used in accordance with federal regulations and proper protective equipment is mandatory.
Working Conditions: The work may require prolonged exposure to elements since it is primarily outdoors. Weather extremes range from over 90 degrees and 90 percent relative humidity in summer to below freezing with snow and winds in winter. Backcountry camping trips of several days are required. Use of pesticides involves exposure to toxic chemicals for which protective equipment is supplies.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
