Research will involve characterizing and understanding the evolving epidemiology of current and emerging swine pathogens. Research objectives include developing new approaches to evaluating the genetic evolution of economically important swine viruses to provide scientific-based approaches for intervention strategies, vaccine and diagnostic test development, pandemic preparedness in swine or other hosts, and potentially detect unknown agents or mutations in known pathogens that contribute to a unique expression of the related disease.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of this position OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:
* Using data structures and algorithms to represent, manipulate, and quantitatively analyze biological sequence data;
* Using numerical and statistical methods for data mining and analysis;
* Working as a project or team member conducting research or planning research objectives which are broad and complex in scope; and
* Primary authorship of papers, reports, or articles in professional publications related to microbiology, computational biology, or bioinformatics.
GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:
* Conducting and publishing genome sequence analysis;
* Designing novel algorithms;
* Working as a project or team leader who has experience in microbiology and/or the research on viral disease concerns for the U.S. swine industry;
* Addressing novel and difficult problems requiring modification of standard methods;
* Preparing comprehensive reports of research findings; and
* Primary authorship of articles in peer-reviewed journals related to understanding the evolving epidemiology of current and emerging swine pathogens.
GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-14 level are:
* Planning and conducting independent research related to relational genetic databases and evolutionary models for viral swine pathogens;
* Managing personnel, materials, equipment, resources, and facilities needed to accomplish research goals; and
* Publishing independent research results related to understanding the relationships among viral mutation, viral evolution, and economically important diseases of swine.
