The incumbent must possess hand-to-eye dexterity and be able to accurately conduct tedious measurement procedures. Long periods of standing are involved for some work. Field work requires hauling heavy equipment over moderate distances in often hot conditions.

To qualify at the 0470 series:
Degree : Soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
OR
Combination of education and experience : courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience supporting research projects focused on wind erosion, soil characterization, or rangeland monitoring; installing and maintaining wind erosion monitoring instrumentation; using analytical instruments and data collection systems to analyze soil or sediment samples; and managing a research laboratory.

Education Substitution: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
