Summary

This position is located in ARS/ Southeast Area/ Tropical Crops and Germplasm Research, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

The purpose of this position is to keep the location’s lawns including shrubs and trees, as well as the experimental plots. The incumbent performs a full range of tasks involved in the maintenance and up keeping of grounds.

Duties

Help

Major duties are included but are not limited to:

  • Operates tractors for mowing grounds using tractor mounted mowers and hand mowers, manual cultivation and spraying
  • Manually sprays and applies herbicides to fence lines, roads and public areas for the control of weeds and unwanted foliage.
  • Operates garden, backhoe tractors and zero-turn mowers in the maintenance of lawn and gardens
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements required to make exact mixtures of pesticides for field preparation
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures to protect himself, others and farm equipment, structures, facilities and crops from accidental damage mechanically or chemically

  • Successful completion of a one year probationary period
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Motor Vehicle Driver's License
  • Able to obtain and maintain a pesticide applicator license

Physical Effort:

In addition to work which typically requires frequent arm and leg movements to operate mower/tractor controls, the gardener/operator has to manipulate equipment controls. Work involves light to moderate physical effort while operating mowers and/or tractors. The operator must frequently lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally must move heavier items.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed inside and outside. Under both conditions the employee is constantly exposed to unpleasant noise levels and vibration and jolting from the tractor and towed vehicles. Outside work often exposes the operator to long periods of hot sun and occasionally to bad weather. May be exposed to chemical dust and sprays and may need to wear protective clothing and respirators. Must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment to avoid injury and possible hazards in the work area.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision(For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Gardener (Tractor Operator), WG-5003-06 without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veterans preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
