National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment,
Agroecosystems Management Research Unit, located in Ames, Iowa.
The
mission of the Agroecosystems Management Research Unit is to develop
practices and technology that increase the efficiency and resilience
of agricultural systems and decrease environmental impacts of
production at the field, farm, and watershed scales.
Summary
This
position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS),
National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment,
Agroecosystems Management Research Unit, located in Ames, Iowa.
The
mission of the Agroecosystems Management Research Unit is to develop
practices and technology that increase the efficiency and resilience
of agricultural systems and decrease environmental impacts of
production at the field, farm, and watershed scales.
The
incumbent of this position actively participates in one or more
phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex
technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment,
common to the assigned area of work, and contributes ideas towards
the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the research.
Major
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Preparing
solutions and reagents for use in a laboratory, field, growth
chamber, or greenhouse.
Collecting,
preparing, and evaluating soil, plant biomass and grain, and tile
drainage water samples.
Maintaining
the field infrastructure for measurement of environmental response
to land management practices.
Assigning
tasks to and assist with training part-time junior technicians in
routine methods and procedures used in the laboratory.
Tabulating,
analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and
software packages.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Subject to satisfactory completion of a one year probationary period.
Physical demands
The lab work will require moderate physical activity, including standing for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying 50 lb. for short distances. An ability to perform precision movements requiring hand-to-eye coordination is necessary. Field work may require more strenuous physical activity, such as digging, stooping, crouching and stretching.
Work environment
The laboratory work requires regular and moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, such as exposure to concentrated acids and bases and flammable chemicals. Work on field studies will result in considerable exposure to hot, cold, windy and wet conditions.

Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in the research process by collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological and water samples related to agriculture and soil science; and recording and compiling research results and data.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Agronomy, Soil Science and Environmental Science.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
At the GS-7:
Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological and water samples related to agriculture and soil science; recording and compiling research results and data; and developing and improving experimental techniques and procedures.
